Will the PU coating peel or crack over time?

Yes, the PU coating can peel or crack over time, but it depends on several factors. First of all, the quality of the PU coating matters a great deal. If it’s a high-quality PU coating that’s been applied properly during manufacturing, it will usually last longer and be less likely to peel or crack quickly. For example, some well-made PU leather products with good coatings can stay in good condition for a few years without showing obvious signs of peeling or cracking when they’re used in normal environments.

However, with regular use and exposure to different elements, problems can arise. One of the main things that can cause the PU coating to peel or crack is frequent bending or folding. Think about a PU leather wallet that you take in and out of your pocket all the time or a PU leather bag that’s constantly being stuffed with things and the sides are getting bent. Over time, the stress on the coating in these areas can make it start to peel away from the base material or develop small cracks.

Exposure to sunlight is another factor. If a PU leather item is left in direct sunlight for long periods, like a PU leather jacket that’s hung outside on a sunny day for hours or a PU leather seat in a car that gets a lot of sun exposure, the UV rays can damage the coating. The heat and light can make the coating become brittle and more likely to crack. In addition, extreme temperatures, whether it’s very hot or very cold, can also have an impact. In a hot car during summer, the PU coating might soften and then when it cools down quickly, it could change its structure and start to crack or peel.

The way we take care of the PU leather product also plays a role. If we don’t clean it properly and use harsh chemicals on it, that can weaken the coating. For instance, using strong solvents to clean stains might dissolve or damage the coating, making it more prone to peeling or cracking later. And if we don’t store it in a good place, like leaving it in a damp basement where there’s moisture in the air, that can also affect the integrity of the coating and cause it to peel or crack as well. So overall, while it might not happen right away, the PU coating can indeed peel or crack as time goes by depending on these various circumstances.
