Is Nike leather cruelty-free?

Nike is a large global brand that has been working on improving its sustainability and ethical practices over the years. When it comes to leather used in its products, Nike has stated that it has certain guidelines for its suppliers. They aim to source leather from suppliers who follow responsible animal welfare practices.

They claim to require that the animals are raised in conditions that are as humane as possible. This includes things like having proper shelter, enough food, and appropriate medical care. The slaughtering process is also supposed to be carried out in a way that reduces the animals’ suffering.

But just like with many other brands, there are challenges. Monitoring the entire supply chain is difficult. There could be situations where some of the tanneries or farms that supply the leather don’t fully comply with the standards set by Nike. Also, from a strict cruelty-free viewpoint, as long as leather comes from animals, there will always be those who argue that it can’t be truly cruelty-free because an animal’s life is sacrificed for the material. So, while Nike is making strides in ethical sourcing of leather, it’s still questioned by some in terms of being completely cruelty-free.
